Hurricane Katrina

Hundreds of thousands of people who lived in the path of Hurricane Katrina have been displaced by the storm and the floods that followed. Many evacuees are staying in hotels or homes of friends and family, but thousands also have sought shelter in centers set up by the Red Cross, government agencies and other organizations. The eye of the massive Category 4 hurricane hit land near the Mississippi/Louisiana border. But the nearly 250-mile wide storm devastated an area the size of Great Britain.

CRISIS IN NUMBERS
90,000 sq mile disaster zone
10,000 originally feared dead
60 nations have offered aid as well as UN, NATO and WHO
13 states now have a state of emergency in force

How to help

As government officials coordinate the efforts to rescue people still trapped in the flooded city of New Orleans and evacuate thousands of displaced residents living in desperate conditions.

TransWorld Katrina Assistance Project

Donate to provide supplies and support to children and families left homeless by Hurricane Katrina. Volunteer agencies provide a wide variety of services after disasters, such as shelter, food, housing repair, crisis counseling and childcare although the most effective and direct way to help those in need is through cash donations, the TWDI has set up the Katrina Assistance Project in the form of the following:

TransWorld True Recycle Program
TransWorld Next of Kin Initiatives
Virtual Adoption and Sponsorship Program
